ABN Amro is the first major bank where customers with savings will soon no longer receive a penny of interest. Customers with more than 2.5 million euros in their bank account will have to pay 0.5% interest even from April 1. The bank promised not to charge negative savings interest for customers with savings up to 100,000 euros.
Ordinary savers have been facing a 0% savings interest rate at smaller banks for some time. Customers at the two other big banks, Rabobank and ING, currently still get 0.01% interest, but financial expert Amanda Bulthuis (of Geld.nl) expect them to follow ABN's example. "We have often seen banks follow each other in their interest rate steps''.
Of the major banks, ABN Amro was the only one to pledge not to charge private customers with savings balances of up to 100,000 euros a negative interest rate. ING and Rabobank did not want to make any firm statements about this. [Article by AD.nl]
The moment to invest your savings
What many savers in the Netherlands feared seems to be happening after all. The ABN Amro is the first (large) bank where you will receive 0% interest on your savings and which is implementing a negative interest rate for large savers. It is expected that other large banks such as Rabobank and SNS will soon follow. This is therefore the time to invest your savings. After all, you will no longer receive interest on it or you will even have to start paying for it.
