Tourist influx breaks record again
DEN HAAG - Once again, a record number of foreign tourists will come to Holland this year. The final forecast of the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Conventions (NBTC) shows that the limit of 20 million visitors is in sight.
"The tourist growth continues steadily. There are expected to be 19.5 million, 4% more than in 2018. In 10 years, there will be at least 29 million. At the beginning of this century there were less than 10 million," says NBTC director Jos Vranken. He has created a strategic three-year plan. "We are going to spread tourists more and focus on neighboring countries and the United States, which are the top five. We especially want repeat visitors, because they are more likely to go somewhere else if they have already been to the Netherlands," Vranken said.
In particular, Vranken is going to use "influencers" to give concrete form to the much-needed steering of tourists. "The archetypal Dutch icons such as our tulips, windmills, clogs, cheese, canals and old masters will be given a new look. You can see those in more places in the Netherlands. Waterworks and Hanseatic cities, for example, will also be highlighted more."
Spreading
According to him, it is important that all Dutch people can benefit from tourism. "This is why we need to solve bottlenecks, improve accessibility and encourage regions to develop more facilities for tourists. We can help bring the right tourists there in a targeted way. That way the nuisance can be reduced," Vranken believes. His budget in 2020 is nine million euros from the ministry. According to Vranken, it will be difficult to relieve the known overcrowded attractions on peak days and better serve attractions outside the Randstad that are eager for tourists. "But through more intensive cooperation, it should be possible."
