The Netherlands counted ten million foreign tourists in July and August this year, figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) showed Monday. That is 4.4 percent more than in the same period last year.
The total number of overnight stays increased by 7.6 percent to 35 million. This is because tourists are staying longer on average.
The share of domestic tourists decreased slightly. Over 44 percent of all tourists in the Netherlands come from abroad. Five years ago, that share was 39 percent.
With over half a million guests, Gelderland is the most popular destination among Dutch people. Among foreigners, Zeeland, North Holland and South Holland are the most popular.
Especially vacation parks have become more popular. These attracted 12 percent more visitors, reports CBS. The number of overnight stays on campsites, in hotels, in guesthouses, in youth hostels and in group accommodations also increased.
The tourism sector in Holland has been doing well for some time. The number of foreign tourists coming to the Netherlands has increased for nine years in a row. July and August are the busiest months for tourism.
